In smaller terraced houses, a side-return infill extension can be the key to creating a proper open-plan kitchen and dining space. Here, the brief was more layered: the clients wanted to open the kitchen to the original outrigger and rear room, while also retaining part of the rear room as a separate utility and buggy store accessed from the hallway.
The solution included a raised floor within the snug, subtly changing the proportions of the room to make it feel more intimate. The raised floor also created concealed storage, accessed both through a hatch in the floor and from cupboard doors within the utility room.
