Southdown Road

A loft conversion and rear extension transformed this Arts and Crafts bungalow, replacing gloomy interiors and imitation timber beams with light, generous spaces and a double-height entrance lobby.

The steep roof pitch and low eaves restricted the options for positioning the new staircase. This became an opportunity to create a double-height entrance space, with a staircase sweeping upwards beside the existing fireplace. High-level rooflights bring daylight into the space and emphasise its height. The fireplace and a small original window tucked beside the chimney breast are retained, preserving something of the bungalow’s original character.

An earlier rear extension meant the proposals could not proceed under permitted development. With the house on the edge of a conservation area, a planning statement demonstrated the variety of roof forms and dormers nearby and the limited visibility of the proposed dormer from neighbouring homes. Planning permission was granted.

The first floor now accommodates a generous bedroom and bathroom, while the ground floor opens into a spacious kitchen, dining and living area, with a slot rooflight bringing additional daylight over the dining space.
