This narrow mid-Victorian Islington terrace was extended and reorganised to create a generous lower-ground living space with a semi-basement rear extension and sunken courtyard.
Despite the restricted width of the house, the new plan fits a kitchen and utility room side by side at the centre of the layout. Appliances are tucked beneath the new stair, with pull-out kitchen storage also integrated below the stair structure. The result is a highly functional kitchen that works hard without visually cluttering the open-plan space.
Bespoke oak bi-fold doors and joinery, made in Sussex, add warmth and craft. Flush floor tiling runs between the interior and the sunken courtyard, with stone steps rising to the main garden. A perimeter slot of glass brings soft ambient light washing down the walls around the edge of the floating ceiling.
